In addition to providing technical agricultural extension services, KDCL provides farmers with inputs such as seeds, fertilizers and technical support that improve their yields, both in quality and quantity (Also contracted by National Value Chain Support Programme to provide subsidized inputs in Homa Bay County).
KDCL also facilitate the sale of their produce and distributes the profits to farmers after deducting their service costs.
In partnership with Kenya Breweries Limited, Ke Devries has done tremendous work in sorghum farming by offering capacity building and technical support service to groups, individual farmers and organizations that has ventured into sorghum production both for subsistence and commercial purposes with an objective to create wealth and improve livelihoods.
Sorghum can be grown in a wide range of soils but does well in fertile well-drained heavy clay soils, light sandy soils with a soil PH of 5.0 to 8.5. Sorghum is resistant and tolerant to salinity and poor soils where it can still produce grain.
According to the 2018 Economic Survey report, Kenya produced 144,000 metric tonnes of sorghum in 2017 which was not enough for domestic consumption, this prompted importation of 133,000 metric tonnes to cover the deficit.
To bridge this gap KDCL(Kedevries Company Limited), through the support of its partners in the sustainable grow and food security initiative, we are training farmers on how best to capitalize on the gap to create employment and increase source of revenue to the youth and women in Homabay county.
